The Mount of Olives is a limestone ridge rising sharply east of the Old City of Jerusalem, separated from the temple area by the narrow Kidron Valley. Its slopes are defined by a sprawling, dense collection of stone grave markers that make up the oldest and largest Jewish cemetery in the world. With roughly one hundred and fifty thousand graves, the site has been a place of burial for three millennia, dating back to the period of the biblical kings.
