The Alexander Nevsky Church is identified by an unassuming wooden door, marked with Cyrillic script, tucked into a narrow street within the Christian Quarter. Built between eighteen ninety-six and nineteen oh three, the structure is a center of Russian Orthodox worship, yet its existence grew from an interrupted construction project. The Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society originally purchased the land in eighteen fifty-seven to build a consulate and hostel for Russian pilgrims. When workers began digging the foundations, they uncovered ancient stone walls and a threshold that researchers associated with the Judgment Gate, the path Jesus is said to have walked toward his crucifixion.
