The City of David is a narrow ridge of land just south of the Old City walls, recognizable by the ongoing archaeological excavations that have uncovered stone fortifications and ancient water systems. It is identified by many historians and scholars as the original core of Jerusalem, a settlement that dates back to the Bronze Age. According to biblical tradition, this is the site where King David established his capital after conquering the city from the Jebusites over three thousand years ago.
