The Basilica of the Ecce Homo is identified by the prominent Roman arch that spans the Via Dolorosa, anchoring the church to the city’s ancient history. Built in the mid-nineteenth century by the Congregation of Notre Dame de Sion, the basilica marks the traditional site where the Roman governor Pontius Pilate presented a bound and thorn-crowned Jesus to the crowd. Pilate’s words, "Ecce Homo," or "Behold the man," spoken according to the Gospel of John, give the site its name.
