Great Temple

The Great Temple stands out in Petra for its massive, terraced footprint, which covers over seven thousand square meters of the city center. While its name suggests a traditional house of worship, the complex lacks a standard altar or central sanctuary. Instead, it features a semi-circular, theater-like interior space capable of seating six hundred people. Architects designed the structure with four colossal columns at its entrance, originally finished in vibrant red and white stucco that contrasted sharply against the surrounding sandstone cliffs.
