High Place of Sacrifice

The High Place of Sacrifice is a flat, rectangular stone platform carved directly into the summit of Jebel Madbah, rising high above the ancient city of Petra. It is reached by a steep ascent of several hundred steps that begin near the Roman-style theater, winding through mountain crevices to the ridge. The site is identified by two massive, six-meter-tall obelisks hewn from the rock, which flank the approach and are thought to represent the primary Nabataean deities, Dushara and Al-Uzzah.
