Winged Lion Temple

The Temple of the Winged Lions stands as a prominent free-standing structure on the north slope of the Wadi Musa, overlooking the center of ancient Petra. Unlike many of the city’s famous monuments, it was built of local sandstone rather than carved directly into the surrounding cliffs. The temple is named for the unique stone capitals featuring winged felines that once adorned columns within its central cult chamber.
