Nabatean Theatre

The Nabatean Theatre is recognizable by its vast, semicircular auditorium carved directly into the rose-red sandstone cliffside. Constructed during the first century under the reign of King Aretas the Fourth, the structure demonstrates a rare blend of local Nabatean rock-cut engineering and the formal layout of theaters found across the Mediterranean. While the seating area was hewn from the mountain, the stage and exterior walls were built from shaped stone blocks.
