Wat Chom Si sits at the summit of Mount Phousi, a one hundred meter hill rising from the center of the Luang Prabang peninsula. Its golden stupa, which stands twenty-one meters tall, is visible from across the town and serves as a primary landmark for the city. King Anourouth ordered the construction of the stupa in eighteen oh four, later choosing a rectangular base for it to fit the narrow dimensions of the mountaintop.
