Wat May Souvannapoumaram is recognizable by the five-tiered roof that sweeps down toward the ground, marking the largest temple in Luang Prabang. Founded around seventeen ninety-six by King Anourout, the monastery became a primary royal temple and the residence of the supreme patriarch of Lao Buddhism. Its facade is covered in intricate, gilded bas-reliefs that illustrate scenes from both Buddhist legends and traditional Lao village life.
