Rynek Podgórski is defined by its unusual triangular shape and the neo-Gothic Church of Saint Joseph that stands at its southern end. The square sits at the base of Lasota Hill, marking the historic heart of Podgórze, a place that functioned as an independent city until nineteen fifteen. In seventeen eighty-four, Emperor Joseph the Second elevated the settlement to the rank of a royal free city, intending it to serve as a direct economic competitor to Kraków by controlling the salt routes to Wieliczka and Bochnia.
