Remains of the Ghetto wall

These stone fragments are all that remain of the barrier that enclosed the Kraków Ghetto during the German occupation of Poland. Established in March nineteen forty-one in the Podgórze district, the ghetto forced fifteen thousand to twenty thousand Jewish residents into an area that previously housed only three thousand people. The wall, with segments designed to resemble tombstones, physically separated the Jewish population from the rest of the city and functioned as an instrument of confinement, surveillance, and oppression.
