Saints Peter and Paul Church

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul on Grodzka Street is recognizable by the row of stone pedestals topped with statues of the twelve apostles that line the iron fence in front of the building. As the first structure in Kraków designed entirely in the Baroque style, it was commissioned by King Sigismund the Third Vasa in the late sixteenth century to serve the Jesuit order. Its construction spanned from fifteen ninety-seven to sixteen nineteen, during which time multiple architects struggled to stabilize the massive walls, eventually requiring a redesign of the foundation and dome.
