The Baluarte de San Jaime is one of seven enormous pentagonal bastions that rise from the Renaissance-era walls encircling the Dalt Vila district of Ibiza. Designed by the Italian engineer Giovanni Battista Calvi in the sixteenth century, this fortification was built to protect the town against pirates and external naval threats under the orders of King Philip II.
