Baluarte de San Pedro

The Baluarte de San Pedro is a massive, pentagonal stone fortification that juts out from the Renaissance walls of Dalt Vila. It is one of seven bastions constructed in the sixteenth century to shield the city from Ottoman forces and North African pirates. The structure began rising in fifteen fifty-five under the direction of the Italian military engineer Giovanni Battista Calvi, who designed the site to withstand the era's new artillery fire.
