MR THOMAS'S CHOP HOUSE

Mr Thomas's Chop House is a distinct, long and narrow building on Cross Street that stands out for its facade of red Accrington brick and elaborate, hand-cast terracotta blocks displaying Art Nouveau motifs. This structure, completed in nineteen oh one, hides a deeper history that began when chef Thomas Studd and his wife Sarah opened a public house and restaurant on this same site in eighteen sixty-seven. The building occupies the footprint of a former Georgian town house, which accounts for its notably slim proportions.
