Carfax Tower

historic

Carfax Tower stands at the junction of Saint Aldate’s, Cornmarket Street, Queen Street, and the High Street. You can recognize it by the mechanical figures known as the quarterboys, which strike bells on the hour and quarter hour. The structure is all that remains of the twelfth-century Saint Martin’s Church, which served as the official civic church of Oxford from eleven twenty-two until eighteen ninety-six, when the main body of the church was demolished to widen the surrounding streets for traffic.
