St John’s College, situated on St Giles’, is distinct for being the wealthiest college in the University of Oxford, a status bolstered by extensive land ownership that dates back to the nineteenth century. Founded in fifteen fifty-five by Sir Thomas White, a master of the Merchant Taylors’ Company, it holds the distinction of being the first Oxford college established by a merchant rather than a member of the clergy.
