St Michael at the North Gate

The most striking feature of St Michael at the North Gate is its rough-hewn stone tower, which dates from approximately one thousand and forty. This tower is the oldest surviving building in Oxford, and it stood as a sentinel just inside the city's northern defensive wall. While the medieval city gates were demolished long ago, the church sits on the site of the former North Gate, overlooking the street of Cornmarket.
