Saint George's Tower is a tall, rectangular structure built of coursed rubble that tapers toward the top. Its walls are nine feet thick at ground level, a measure of its original defensive purpose as part of the western fortifications of Oxford. While the tower is often associated with the Norman castle established here in ten seventy-one, its architecture lacks Norman characteristics and many now believe it originated as a late Saxon watchtower, potentially pre-dating the castle itself.
