New College is defined by its Front Quadrangle, the first academic courtyard of its kind in Oxford, which established the enclosed, integrated layout that would be imitated by colleges across the world. Founded in thirteen seventy-nine by William of Wykeham, Bishop of Winchester, the site features an ancient stretch of the city wall, which the college has been contractually required to maintain since its inception.
