The Divinity School is easily identified by its elaborate, fan-vaulted ceiling, which features four hundred fifty-five carved stone bosses. Completed in fourteen eighty-eight, this medieval room is the oldest surviving purpose-built space for university teaching in Oxford. It was constructed specifically for lectures, oral examinations, and scholarly debates on theology, a field then considered the pinnacle of academic study.
