Martyrs' Memorial

The Martyrs' Memorial rises as a tall, ornate spire of magnesium limestone at the junction of Saint Giles, Magdalen Street, and Beaumont Street. Designed by the architect George Gilbert Scott and completed in eighteen forty-three, the monument resembles the medieval Eleanor crosses, which King Edward the First once raised to mark the funeral path of his wife.
