History of Science Museum

The History of Science Museum occupies a distinct, stone-built structure on Broad Street. Completed in sixteen eighty-three, this building is the oldest surviving purpose-built museum in the world. It first opened as the original Ashmolean Museum, providing a home for curiosities and early scientific inquiry. By the late seventeenth century, the basement contained a chemical laboratory, while the middle floor hosted lectures on natural history.
