New College Lane is a narrow, winding passage framed by high stone walls that enclose the gardens and courtyards of the university colleges. Its most distinct feature is the covered Hertford Bridge, completed in nineteen fourteen, which arches over the lane to connect two parts of Hertford College. Though visitors often call it the Bridge of Sighs and claim it is a replica of the Venetian bridge, it is a unique structure designed by Sir Thomas Jackson that draws more inspiration from the Rialto Bridge.
