The building at eighty-four High Street is a marble-pillared, gold-leafed café that occupies the site where England’s first coffee house opened in sixteen-fifty. Known then as the Angel Inn, the premises provided a gathering place for those who, according to the local antiquary Anthony Wood, delighted in the novelty of drinking coffee.
