The Mercure Oxford Eastgate Hotel occupies a corner of the High Street characterized by its stuccoed facade, which echoes the style of eighteenth-century townhouses. This site marks the location where the city’s medieval East Gate once stood until its removal in seventeen seventy-one. The current structure incorporates several seventeenth-century coaching inns, including the former Crosse Sword inn, which architect Edward Prioleau Warren converted into a hotel between eighteen ninety-nine and nineteen hundred.
