Oxford Castle Prison

Oxford Castle Prison is marked by the tall, stone St George’s Tower, one of the oldest structures in the city. Originally built as a Norman motte-and-bailey fortress in ten seventy-one by Robert D’Oyly, the site shifted over centuries from a strategic military stronghold to a county jail. By the fourteenth century, the castle had largely lost its defensive purpose and began its long life as a place of confinement, eventually expanding into what became Her Majesty's Prison Oxford.
