Original Site of Bancroft Library

This location marks the former home of the Bancroft Library, a collection that grew to become the foundation for the study of western North American history. Hubert Howe Bancroft began gathering these materials in eighteen sixty, eventually moving his growing library into a dedicated building on Valencia Street in eighteen eighty-one.
