Beneath the pavement at the foot of King Street lies the wooden hull of the Lydia, an eighteen-forty whaling bark that spent decades in the Pacific before it was abandoned in San Francisco. While the city grew over the shoreline, the ship remained trapped in the mud until nineteen-eighty, when workers digging for a new sewer system unexpectedly struck its timbers.
