1852 South Beach Shoreline

A bronze ribbon embedded in the sidewalk traces a path where the waters of San Francisco Bay once touched land. In eighteen fifty-two, this line marked the edge of Steamboat Point, a bluff overlooking a narrow beach and bustling boatyards. Today, all the land extending toward the water beyond King Street is man-made, created by dumping thousands of cubic yards of sandhills and rubble into the bay to accommodate a growing city.
