The Kong Chow Benevolent Association building on Stockton Street stands out for the traditional Chinese architectural elements and ornate detailing that adorn its upper-floor temple. Originally founded by Cantonese immigrants in eighteen forty-nine, this organization served as a vital mutual aid society, providing social, medical, and financial support for newcomers during the Gold Rush era. Following the total destruction of its previous site in the nineteen oh six earthquake and fire, the association eventually relocated to this current building in nineteen seventy-seven.
