The San Francisco Fire Department Engine Company Number 2 building on Bush Street is marked by a dramatic stone facade and a wide, arched entrance. Built in nineteen oh eight, this Beaux-Arts structure was the first firehouse constructed in the downtown district following the nineteen oh six earthquake and fires. City architect Newton J. Tharp designed the building to bring a sense of civic permanence to a city in recovery, using a classical style rarely seen in the department's other stations.
