United Nations Plaza (San Francisco)

United Nations Plaza is a two and a half acre pedestrian space defined by its irregular red brick paving and a large, sunken fountain built of stacked granite blocks. Completed in nineteen seventy-five, the plaza serves as a formal gateway between the commercial bustle of Market Street and the grand Beaux-Arts buildings of the city's Civic Center. Architects Lawrence Halprin, John Carl Warnecke, and Mario Ciampi designed the site to coincide with the reconstruction of Market Street and the construction of the underground transit station located beneath the square.
