Embarcadero station sits beneath Market Street, distinguished by a three-level layout that separates a large mezzanine from distinct platform levels for Muni Metro and BART trains. Unlike the other stations along the Market Street subway, it was not part of the original system plans. The station shell was constructed as an infill project during the early nineteen seventies, specifically to accommodate the rapid development of the lower Market Street area and the surrounding Golden Gateway project.
