A massive Monterey cypress stands on the lawn before the McLaren Lodge at the edge of Golden Gate Park. This tree, estimated to have been planted around eighteen eighty, serves as the official Christmas tree of San Francisco. It is known as Uncle John’s Tree, named for John McLaren, the Scottish horticulturist who spent his life transforming the park’s original sand dunes into a lush landscape.
