Clarks Point (San Francisco)

Clarks Point marks a vanished edge of the city. Once a rocky cape known in Spanish as Punta del Embarcadero, this site stood at the northern entrance to the shallow, muddy waters of Yerba Buena Cove. In eighteen forty-seven, a pioneer named William Squire Clark drove wooden piles into the bay floor here to build the first wharf in San Francisco.
