Frederick Griffing's (ship)

Beneath the office complex at Levi's Plaza lies the remains of a nineteenth-century sailing vessel, buried during the rapid expansion of the San Francisco waterfront. In the spring of nineteen seventy-eight, construction crews digging at the site unexpectedly struck the wooden hull of what is now known as Frederick Griffing’s ship. The vessel, likely a packet ship built in eighteen twenty-seven, had been intentionally sunk in eighteen fifty-two to serve as a foundation for a wharf.
