The National Shrine of Saint Francis of Assisi is marked by two Norman-Gothic towers that rise above the surrounding buildings in the North Beach district. Founded in June eighteen forty-nine, it holds the distinction of being the first parish established in California outside of the mission system. The original adobe structure served the influx of Catholic immigrants arriving during the Gold Rush.
