The United States Mint in Denver is a striking, fortress-like structure clad in rusticated Colorado granite, designed in the Second Renaissance Revival style to resemble the Palazzo Medici Riccardi in Florence. It sits at the corner of West Colfax Avenue and Cherokee Street, a site acquired by the federal government in eighteen ninety-six. While Congress first authorized a branch mint for Denver in eighteen sixty-two, the building did not open until nineteen oh four, and coinage operations finally commenced in nineteen oh six.
