Canal Street stretches one hundred seventy-one feet wide, a scale that sets it apart as one of the widest thoroughfares in the country. This immense breadth exists because, in eighteen oh seven, French surveyor Joseph Antoine Vinache conceptualized a navigation canal to link the Mississippi River with the interior waterways of Bayou Saint John and Lake Pontchartrain.
