Pirates Alley

Pirates Alley is defined by its narrow, stone-paved passage running directly between the St. Louis Cathedral and the Cabildo in the heart of the French Quarter. Originally known as Orleans Alley, this path served as a functional shortcut for government officials moving between colonial administrative buildings. While the name suggests a history of swashbuckling intrigue, historians note it likely emerged later, fueled by local lore about smugglers like Jean Lafitte and perhaps the presence of a shop called The Pirate's Chest in the early twentieth century.
