Saint Augustine Catholic Church

Saint Augustine Catholic Church is identified by the Tomb of the Unknown Slave, a shrine in the garden plot consisting of large marine chains welded into the shape of a cross. Dedicated on October ninth, eighteen forty-two, the church was established in the Tremé neighborhood on land once part of the Claude Tremé plantation. It stands as the oldest African-American Catholic parish in the United States, founded by free people of color who petitioned Bishop Antoine Blanc for the space.
