Congo Square is a three-acre open space located within Louis Armstrong Park, marked by its history as a rare gathering ground for enslaved Africans and free people of color in New Orleans. Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, this site allowed Black residents to congregate on Sundays to trade goods, socialize, and maintain the musical and dance traditions of their ancestral homelands.
