Jackson Square

Jackson Square is defined by the massive bronze equestrian statue of General Andrew Jackson at its center, a twenty-thousand-pound monument that famously balances on the horse's two hind legs without any external support. For much of its history, this two-and-a-half-acre space served as the Place d'Armes, a military parade ground and the colonial heart of New Orleans. It was here that soldiers drilled and public punishments were carried out under French and Spanish rule.
