Tomb of the Unknown Slave (St. Augustine Churchyard)

Next to the walls of the Saint Augustine Catholic Church sits an iron cross formed from heavy chains and rusted metal shackles. This monument, known as the Tomb of the Unknown Slave, stands within the churchyard to honor the nameless and faceless individuals who died under the brutal conditions of American slavery. Smaller crosses are placed in the ground around the central structure, creating a space for reflection on the lives lost and buried in unmarked graves throughout the Tremé neighborhood and across the country.
