The Napoleon House is a three-story brick building topped with a distinctive cupola and adorned with shallow ironwork balconies on its second floor. It sits on the corner of Chartres and Saint Louis Streets in the French Quarter. Built around seventeen ninety-seven and later enlarged for Nicholas Girod, who served as mayor of New Orleans, the structure carries a name born from a daring local legend. In eighteen twenty-one, Girod supposedly devised a plot with the pirate Jean Lafitte to rescue Napoleon Bonaparte from his exile on the island of Saint Helena and bring him to live in this very building.
