Five hundred forty Saint Peter Street is part of the Upper Pontalba Building, a four-story brick structure defined by its long, intricate cast-iron balconies overlooking Jackson Square. Constructed between eighteen forty-nine and eighteen fifty-one by the Baroness Micaela Almonester de Pontalba, the building was intended to anchor the social and commercial life of the city. By the turn of the twentieth century, the grand apartments had transitioned into tenement housing before undergoing major renovations.
