Hotel Monteleone rises as the only high-rise building within the interior of the French Quarter, its Beaux-Arts facade spanning the corner of Royal and Iberville streets. Antonio Monteleone, a Sicilian cobbler who opened a shop on Royal Street in eighteen eighty, purchased a small hotel at this site in eighteen eighty-six. Five generations of his family have operated the property since, expanding it five times over the decades to its present size of five hundred and seventy rooms.
