Lombardi’s, located at thirty-two Spring Street, is marked by a red-and-white checkerboard interior and a coal-fired brick oven. It is widely recognized as the first pizzeria in the United States, an identity built on the history of Gennaro Lombardi, an Italian immigrant who arrived in New York in nineteen oh four. While early accounts claimed he founded the business in nineteen oh five at a different address nearby, recent research suggests that the shop’s history is more complex, with evidence pointing to other earlier establishments and even other owners in the neighborhood.
